Jim Chuchu at the Electric South VR Workshop

Our own Jim Chuchu went down to the beautiful (and chilly) Boschendal wine estate in Cape Town to take part as an advisor in the second edition of Electric South's New Dimensions VR workshop. There, he made a presentation to the1 participants about our experiences as a collective working on our virtual reality short early this year, what we learned in the process, and how VR may be useful in our future work.

Throughout the workshop, it was interesting to see the huge technological strides and new techniques that have emerged since we were in production early this year. It was also great to reconnect with some of our favorite artists like fellow workshop adviser Selly Raby Kane and workshop participant Sarah Waiswa. Other highlights included listening to the amazing Kamal Sinclair’s insights on emerging technology’s intersections with gender, race and sexual minorities (read some of her thoughts here and look out for her forthcoming report on the same), getting to see amazing VR films like Darren Emerson’s Indefinite - a poignant VR piece about detention of immigrants in the UK, and getting hands-on with Tilt Brush!
