The Nest at The Wiesbaden Biennale 2022

The Wiesbaden Biennale takes place at the Wiesbaden State Theatre in the city of Wiesbaden, located in the Hesse state, Germany. The festival aims to celebrate and foreground differences in all possible forms via showcasing new works, perspectives, and aesthetics! We were honoured by the invitation to attend this festival, via the extension of our exploration with the Feminine and The Foreign. With the festival as co-producers, we were able to add two new chapters exploring black resistance, organising, strategy, healing and love: one looking at the wider Rhein-Main area near Hesse, extending to Frankfurt, and another exploring similar work in our home, here in Nairobi, Kenya! We were thrilled to talk to old friends and meet new activists and thinkers here, exploring work that situates successes and failures in movement building here at home, as well as pausing to see how communities are built, how healing is taking place, and how love is being fostered, even during increasingly hard times.

We travelled to Wiesbaden this September to premiere the two new chapters—Nairobi and Rhein Main—honouring the work of the following incredibly people in Nairobi; Kedolwa Waziri, Ruth Khakhame, Phelister Abdalla, Ava Mrima, Mumbi Makena and Neo Musangi. The Rhein-Main holds space for the work of Aicha De Bah-Diallo, Latifah Cengel, Kai Logarić, Sakhile Matlhare, Amira Zarari, Adiam Zerisenai. We wrapped up the screening of the Nairobi film with a FLINTA* party, which we dubbed ‘High Voltage’, hosted in the beautiful theatre foyer, featuring epic DJ performances from our very own Ziggie and JP, and Frankfurt’s Muzu and Miss Eleo

We’re super grateful to everyone who made this incredible project possible: the wonderful team at the Biennale, especially Kilian, Alisa and Caroline, and our project producer Selam, Siraad and the ISD network, and Sebastian Knoll and the Mainfilm team! The films will soon be up, and we are currently in talks to screen them in Nairobi soon! Details to follow—do keep an eye out!
