Workshop: Independent Filmmaking in Kenya

We were thrilled to host a two day workshop series at Baraza Media Lab in early March (just before the ‘Rona landed, thankfully). The workshop was called “Independent Filmmaking in Kenya: A Practical Guide.” Each day was set apart for different elements we have found important to focus in filmmaking.

The first day was led by our very own Noel and Mars, who focused on camera methods and cinematography, and then creating/editing soundscapes for film, respectively. They used several examples and tied this to their own personal experiences on sets with the Collective and with other filmmakers. Njeri took over on day two, and led a lively discussion about the role of the production department throughout the whole filmmaking process from scriptwriting, to making budgets, casting, the actual shoot, edits and distribution, and she was assisted by Dr. Njoki. Jim Chuchu concluded the workshop with a discussion on the importance of visual storytelling that is relevant to African audiences in this day and age.

We are currently working on a manual (this process is being led by Dr. Akati Khasiani) that will include all the workshop contents, as well as a contribution from Sunny Dolat (who was away during that time and couldn’t teach his session on wardrobe and art for film, but will write it up for the manual)! We will share it here soon as it is ready, towards the end of the second quarter!
